Stand Up Paddle Boarding (SUP) in Breckenridge

Once the ice has melted in the Breckenridge high-country, it’s hard to find a still body of water without witnessing stand up paddle boarding in Breckenridge, also know as SUPing. With rental locations throughout Breckenridge, SUPers flock to areas like Maggie Pond or nearby Lake Dillon to feed their need for floating freely among the mountains.

Maggie Pond offers sweaping views of the TenMile Range as well as a convenient in-town location.

Maggie Pond is an ideal place for families and first-timers to try paddle boarding.  It offers incredible views of the Tenmile Mountain Range, a convenient in-town location and extremely calm waters.

Maggie Pond is located at the base of Peak 9 near Main Street Station, and is a continuation of the Upper Blue River as it begins its flow through downtown Breckenridge. It’s an easy walk from Main Street and a perfect way to spend an hour (or two, or three) of your day.

If you are looking for a bigger lake and more challenging excursion, head to Lake Dillon. Both Frisco and Dillon offer full service marinas.   Local’s Tip: While both marinas rent paddle boards by the hour, more affordable day rentals can be found in Breckenridge.

Where to rent a stand up paddle board in Breckenridge

During the summer, Charter Sports at Main Street Station in Breckenridge does walk-up paddle board rentals by the hour.  It’s a great activity to try if you are walking around Main Street or are looking for entertainment before or after lunch.

If you are looking for full day stand up paddle board rentals, Alpine Sports offers a great selection of inflatable and non-inflatable boards.

Yoga SUP at Breckenridge

Head to Maggie Pond to spend a few hours on the water.

Wear comfortable clothes and bring along sun protection (sunscreen, hat and sunglasses), clothing layers and a re-usable water bottle.  Life-jackets are essential when heading out on our alpine lakes.  If you are renting a SUP board the outfitter will also provide a life jacket. At Maggie Pond there will be space on shore to keep your belongings and shoes in a safe and secure space. If you are headed to Lake Dillon, your supplies can easily be secured to the front of your board.

Take your yoga practice out of the studio and into the outdoors. SUP Yoga is low impact, strengthens the core, and creates a strong sense of equilibrium.

Take your yoga practice outdoors with a SUP yoga class. Meta Yoga Studios and the Breckenridge Recreation Center offer SUP classes on Maggie Pond and Lake Dillon throughout the summer.  SUP Yoga is fun, challenging and relaxing all wrapped up in an inspiring experience on the water.  It’s a great activity for all levels as instructors are able to modify posses and difficulty based on ability level.

Local’s Tip: Pre-registration is required for all classes and space is limited. Private classes are also available – perfect for family trips or bachelor/bachelorette parties!

Lake Dillon Reservoir is a great place to enjoy the most popular water based activities like fishing, kayaking, paddle boarding, sailing and boating.

Lake Dillon offers spectacular views of Rocky Mountains.Lake Dillon is another popular SUPing and kayaking location with several beach access points, including from the Frisco and Dillon Marinas. Both Marinas offer paddle board and kayak rentals which include a demonstration of paddle boarding technique if needed. If you have your own board or kayak, you can launch at either marina or one of the many beach access points around the lake.

  • Local’s Tip: Go early in the morning or in the evening for sunset- the water is calmer with less boat traffic and wind.
