Breck Bike Week: Join Our Community of Cyclists

From novice pedalers to pro riders there is something for all levels of bikers

BRECKENRIDGE, CO - June 17, 2010 – You know Moab is a slick rock haven, and you’ve taken a spin on Crested Butte’s buttery trails, but have you ridden the mining-paths-turned-singletrack in Breckenridge? One of “Breck’s” best kept secrets is its expansive backcountry trail network – an interconnected system that can be accessed from anywhere in town within two minutes and leading to hundreds of miles of riding across Summit County. Recently named a silver-level Bicycle Friendly Community by the League of American Bicyclists, Breckenridge will introduce visitors to a biker’s playground during the second annual Breck Bike Week, July 5-11, 2010.

Kicked off by the USA Cycling Mountain Bike Marathon National Championships, the Firecracker 50 on July 4, visitors will be able to race or partake in all the non-competitive aspects of Breck Bike Week including high-end bike demos, led group rides, bike-in movie nights, trail building, lectures, clinics, bike fits and tunes, kids’ races, daily Tour de France viewing parties and more. The bonus is that all Breck Bike Week activities are FREE and open to everyone. In addition, this week will showcase the town’s history as well as shopping, dining, lodging, other unique activities and temperate summer weather.

Breckenridge is a unique mountain resort in comparison to its neighbors in that it is an authentic historic mining town full of full-time outdoorsy residents who want nothing more than to introduce visitors to the bike paths, trails and roads that make up their backyard bike playground. Breck Bike Week will do just that. In addition, Breck is surrounded by a trail network the width and breadth of which is unsurpassed in North America, a resource the community is very committed to protect and preserve…while still enjoying it to its fullest. While here, cyclists are invited to give back to the trails through trail building workshops. Breck Bike Week is a feast for cyclists of all types and truly communicates the town’s passion for biking.

Breck Bike Week Event Details
Daily Festivities All Week Long:

• Daily viewings of the Tour: Every morning from 7:30 to 9:30 a.m. in the Blue River Plaza, watch the Tour de France live on the big screen. Afternoon and evening replays will also be shown. Bring your coffee and get your TdF fix before your ride.
• Demo top of the line bikes: At the Blue River Plaza and Washington Avenue all day, every day. Featuring Yeti, Rocky Mountain and more!
• Learn at lunch: Daily bike maintenance clinics and tech tips from 12 to 1 p.m. in the Blue River Plaza.
• Venture out on self-guided loops: Several 10 to 30-mile rides that guests can explore on their own. Maps with designated routes will be available through the Breck Bike Week concierge at the Blue River Plaza.
• Mechanics tent and bike concierge: A tent will be set-up in the Blue River Plaza from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily providing free bike servicing, bike related information, maps and merchandise.

Breck Bike Week Special Features:

• Firecracker 50 – 10 a.m. Sunday, July 4: USA Cycling Mountain Bike Marathon National Championships. They lead the parade on July 4th. Come cheer the racers on.
• Tour the trails with guided rides – 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday: One-hour, guided group rides highlight town trails and history. Meet at the Blue River Plaza.
• Ripstoke trials show – 2 p.m. Tuesday, July 6: Athletes perform a multitude of bike tricks and techniques to navigate their bicycles over seemingly impossible obstacles at the Riverwalk Center.
• Bike Week cruiser ride – 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 6: Calling all cruisers, klunkers and townie bikes for a fun spin through the streets of Breck. If you work up an appetite or thirst, stop in participating bars and restaurants for food and drink specials.
• Bike-in movie nights – 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 6 and Thursday, July 8: Ride over to the Riverwalk Center and cuddle up to watch an outdoor movie on the grass with your friends and family. 7/6 “Triplets of Belleville,” 7/8 “Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure.”
• Bike fit demo – Time/Date TBD: Ride like a pro, or at least have a bike fit like the pros - come down to the Blue River Plaza and learn more about 3-dimensional, computer automated bike fitting.
• Volunteer trail maintenance – 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday, July 8: Improve the B-Line trail and help construct new freeride features. Meet in the Blue River Plaza.
• IMBA “Best Practices” lecture – 5 p.m. Thursday, July 8: Discuss mountain biking’s future in Summit County at the Blue River Plaza.
• MTB Junior League ride – 4 to 6 p.m. Friday, July 9: Group will roll out from the Old Tiger Town Site promptly at 4 p.m. (4.7 miles from Hwy 9 on Tiger Rd). Kids must be proficient on their own 24 inch wheel, triple chain ring bike to participate. Parents welcome.
• Shimano Youth Series races – 5:30 p.m. on Friday, July 9: Fun-filled races at the pump track at the Stephen C. west Ice Arena. Open to children ages 3 to 7. Shimano gift bags for all participants. NO training wheels.
• Kids’ movie night – Time TBD Friday, July 9: Bring the kids to see “Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure” (rated PG) at the Speakeasy in the old Colorado Mountain College building.
• Poker ride – 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, July 10: Hit the trails on a fun, 20 mile marked course highlighting the best singletrack in town. Arrival at designated aid station check points earns you one playing card. The best poker hand at the end of the ride wins big prizes.
• Kids’ go fish ride – 9 a.m to 1 p.m. Saturday, July 10: Affectionately named, this is the kids’ version of the poker ride. Little ones and their parents will visit local museums to answer historic trivia questions and collect playing cards in order to come up with the best hand.
• Poker ride/go fish after party – 1 p.m. Saturday, July 10: Come and celebrate with your fellow riders/gamblers. Present your number plate for free beer and specials on food. Several prizes awarded in both categories.
• Road ride – 10 a.m. Sunday, July 11: Casual roadie ride, go at your own pace. Meet in the Blue River Plaza.
• Mountain bike ride with the Mayor – 10 a.m. Sunday, July 11: Enjoy a scenic and informative tour of historic sites located on town trails with Breckenridge’s Mayor, John Warner and the Breckenridge Heritage Alliance. Gain perspective on preservation projects and behind the scenes advocacy.
