David Garrett and Bonnie Smith to be crowned 2010 Breckenridge Mardi Gras REX and Queen

BRECKENRIDGE, Colo. – February 12, 2010 – Long time Breckenridge locals, David Garrett and Bonnie Smith will be crowned Breckenridge’s 2010 Mardi Gras Rex and Queen at the annual Bacchus Ball tomorrow night, February 13 at Beaver Run Resort.

David Garrett – 2010 Breckenridge Mardi Gras REX

In the fall of 1979, Garrett loaded up his Jeep CJ-7 from his home in Iowa heading west for new adventures in life. That winter, he worked in Keystone as a bartender.

Thirty years later, Garrett and his sister are owners of Ski Country Resorts and Sports, a vacation rental company and Sports shop, celebrating more than 20 years of business on Main Street in Breckenridge. David lives in Breckenridge with his wife, Soni and two sons, Luke and Ridge, and his family enjoys all of the outdoor activities and community events the town has to offer. Garrett is a well known figure in the community and was selected to be this year’s Mardi Gras Rex by the former Mardi Gras Rexes of Breckenridge’s past.

“The enthusiasm surrounding Mardi Gras has enveloped our hometown, and I am honored to be crowned Rex of this growing community celebration,” Garrett said. “This year’s event is highlighted by the underdog New Orleans Saints winning their first Super Bowl in franchise history, and I am happy for the people of New Orleans and Louisiana who are able to celebrate this momentous event in the aftermath of hurricane Katrina and the devastation they have endured.”

Bonnie Smith - 2010 Breckenridge Mardi Gras Queen

Smith came to Summit County 23 years ago from Massachusetts by way of New Jersey. Smith is the co-owner of Exclusive Mountain Retreats Real Estate and is the Managing Broker at the Main Street Breckenridge location.

Smith’s passions are non-profits, community, politics, music, and outdoor activities. She is a passionate advocate of housing issues through the Summit, Colorado, and National Association of Realtors. Through her work with the Realtors Associations, Smith has built homes in New Orleans for the past three years, and is planning another trip this November.

“It is particularly meaningful to me to be Mardi Gras Queen, since I have such an emotional tie to the New Orleans community through my work with Realtors Associations around the country, and such a deep commitment to our Breckenridge community. What an honor,” Smith said.

Smith is extremely involved in the Breckenridge community from singing the national anthem at events and volunteering with local non-profits to being the longest running member of the Breckenridge Resort Chamber Ambassadors. The former Breckenridge Mardi Gras Queens thought it only fitting that Smith take this year’s crown.

Garrett and Smith will be crowned the Mardi Gras REX and Queen at the Bacchus Ball tomorrow night, and people can also catch a glimpse of them riding down Main Street in Breckenridge’s annual Fat Tuesday Procession at 4:30 p.m. this Tuesday, February 16.
