The Lighting of Breckenridge Celebrates the Magic of the Holiday Season

Santa arrives in Breckenridge to light the Town Tree on December 5th

BRECKENRIDGE, Colo. – Breckenridge is a quaint Victorian town in the heart of the Colorado Rockies with a truly old-fashioned celebration that gets everyone in the holiday spirit. Breckenridge kicks off its holiday season with the Lighting of Breckenridge on December 5, 2009. The Lighting of Breckenridge brings together guests and residents to celebrate the magic of the holidays and light the town tree with Santa.

The Lighting of Breckenridge begins at 4:30 p.m. where holiday revelers gather at the north end of the town’s historic Main Street for hot cocoa, cookies and caroling. As the cocoa cups empty, the crowd anxiously awaits Santa’s arrival.

Santa meets the holiday revelers at 5 p.m. in a horse drawn carriage, and leads the group in a procession down Main Street singing carols. The procession makes a stop at the Blue River Plaza where Santa greets the crowd and lights the town tree. The tree is decorated with vibrant ornaments and twinkling lights, and a large crowd gathers to view its illumination.

Following the lighting of the town tree, Santa continues the procession, which ends with Santa visits and holiday music. This event truly embodies the yuletide season and gets everyone in the holiday spirit.

While in-town for the Lightning of Breckenridge – take advantage of one of the best shopping districts in Colorado’s high country - Main Street Breckenridge. With more than 200 shops and 75 restaurants, visitors can find plenty of unique gifts, jewelry, fine art, ornaments, toys and a variety of clothing and winter gear. Holiday festivities take place in Breckenridge throughout December including Arts District workshops to decorate ornaments and holiday cards, a Holiday Arts Market December 11-13, performances of Winter Wonderettes featuring favorite holiday music at the Breckenridge Theatre, holiday museum open houses, strolling carolers and more.
