Snow fell from the gods during the 2008 Ullr Fest Parade, from 4:30 to 5:15 p.m. on Breckenridge’s crowded Main Street. More than 20 quirky floats were showcased in the wacky event that pays homage to Ullr, the Norse god of snow.
Thursday’s judges awarded first place honors to the Grand Lodge at Peak 7 and Ullr Schnapps float, Ullr Party Train. This float was packed with Ullr party goers and showcased a gigantic paper machete statue of Ullr with his tongue sticking out. Second place was given to Good Times Dog Sledding for their float, Doggy Style, which included a dog sled team of Huskies pulling a truck bed full of people. Coming in a close third was Rob Theobald’s float, Ullr Snowcat Express. This float consisted of a large flatbed truck carrying a snowcat along with a snow blower blasting snow and skiers being pulled behind. A panel of five judges ranked each float on creativity, theme/fun and workmanship. Prize packages were donated by the Breckenridge Resort Chamber, Breckenridge Ski Resort, Budweiser, Grand Timber Lodge and Grand Lodge at Peak 7, KSMT and Ullr Schnapps.
Other parade highlights included the traditional, but unofficial, Ullr gold underwear streakers, a green and white retro Scout carrying Ullr King and Queen, Brett and Stephanie Howard and plenty of creative Ullr characters.
