Stomping Week.
The big pile! – The future snow masterpieces start as a big pile of snow waiting to be packed into 12 foot high concrete forms and stomped into blocks by hearty volunteers.
The preparation – Concrete forms 12 feet high are used to create the blocks of snow that artists use to sculpt their masterpieces.
Stomping – The volunteers work hard to stomp the top layer of a nearly completed block. Day 1.
They’re off! – Assistant Chief of Police Greg Morrison sets the competitors to work at the Starbucks Shotgun Start.
Tools of the trade – The artists are only allowed hand tools to create their sculptures.
A truly international flavor – Representing a diverse field of international teams, Team China wastes no time starting their sculpture. Day 2.
Teams continue their meticulous hard work throughout the day.
Sawing the block – The chain saw is an important tool in the early days. Not the power tool but the saw that is a chain is used to take large blocks off sculpture.
Reaching upward – team Spain reaches for the sky as they build upward with blocks taken from the main sculpture.
From snow to art – What looks like a pile of snow will become two buffalos locked in battle. Day 3.
Team China gets technical with special tools and focus.
The big chunks still fall – As the details of the sculptures come out big pieces of snow still need to come off.
A truly interactive event – A sculptor takes the time to explain their sculpture to an onlooker.
The details come out – Team France’s Sculpture is really starting to show intricate details. Day 4.
Scaffolding allows teams to work on the same level with their creations.
The anticipation builds as spectators and competitors gather to check out the progress.
Delicate sculptures – Team Yukon, Canada has emptied out the middle of their sculpture creating a hollow orb.
The crowd grows – the crowd grows each day as the sculptures are closer to being finished.
Team China is close! – A member of team China works on the fine details of their amazing sculpture. Day 5.
Final touches are added as the snow gently dusts the sculptures.
